Determining Districts

In a census year, data is collected based on the residence of the population on April 1st. At the state level, by April 1st of the year following the census, in this case 2021, the Census Bureau Director will provide geographically defined population counts to the Governor, legislative leaders and state liaisons.

Once the data is received, legislative leadership forms redistricting committees, which are charged to draw new political boundaries for Congressional, State Senate and House of Delegate Districts to ensure equal representation within West Virginia.

Once the initial plans are completed, the House and Senate generate the reports and maps needed for the formation of the Redistricting Bill. This normally takes place during a special session the year following the census.

In the 2021 3rd Extraordinary Session, the West Virginia Legislature concluded its redistricting process.

Districts Breakdown

The House of Delegates is divided into 100 single-member districts. Delegates serve two-year terms and all seats are up for election every two years.

The Senate is divided into 17 districts with 2 Senators from each district. There are 34 Senators serving 4 year terms with half of the seats up for election every two years.

Congressional Districts

West Virginia is split into two districts for congressional elections. The State has two representatives in the House of Representatives and two Senators.
