Minority Caucus Congratulates Ihlenfeld

Charleston, WV – After President Biden nominated Senator William Ihlenfeld, Jr. (D-Ohio) to serve as the US Attorney for the Northern District this summer, the US Senate voted last night to confirm him. Senate Democratic leadership applauds this selection.

“It has been our distinct honor to serve alongside Bill Ihlenfeld in the Senate since 2018,” said Minority Leader Stephen Baldwin (D-Greenbrier). “Bill brings a sharp mind, a tender heart, and a tenacious work ethic to bear on every task before him. While we are sad to lose him as a member of the WV Senate, our loss is a gain for the American people. I’m confident he will be tenacious in enforcing the law and seeking justice as the US Attorney for the Northern District of West Virginia.”

“President Biden’s nomination of Bill comes as no surprise in light of his exemplary past performance as US Attorney,” said Senator Mike Woelfel (D-Cabell), the Minority Whip. “The state Senate will miss Bill’s wit and intellect. We wish him the best.” Other members of the caucus had similarly glowing congratulations and well wishes. “The WV Senate loss is a Northern West Virginia US Attorney’s Office gain,” echoed Senator Ron Stollings (D-Boone). “Ihlenfeld did a great job as a senator.”

“Senator Ihlenfeld brought a balanced, thoughtful, and thorough perspective to all legislation and is a superstar at presenting convincing arguments. He is the best choice for US Attorney, as much as I hate to lose him,” said Senator Mike Caputo (D-Marion).

“Public service takes many forms, and it’s great to see Senator Ihlenfeld transition into a role that will allow West Virginians to further benefit from his extensive qualifications,” said Senator Bob Beach (D-Monogalia).

Many senators in the caucus remarked on their personal friendship with Ihlenfeld in addition to his superb professional qualifications. Senator Rich Lindsay (D-Kanawha), said, “I congratulate my friend, Bill Ihlenfeld, for his confirmation to US Attorney in the Northern District of WV. To say we will miss him in the State Senate is understatement. Thank you for your dedication to West Virginia. And thank you for your friendship.”

“Senator Ihlenfeld is one of the finest public servants with whom I have ever served,” said Senator Mike Romano (D-Harrison). “No one believes more in fairness and justice than Bill. Even when it is contrary to his personal positions, Bill always does the right thing for West Virginians that work hard for a living. He comes from a great family which endowed him with the highest level personal integrity,” continued Romano. “He will make a great US Attorney, and I am proud to call him my friend. I will miss Bill in the Senate.”

The First Senate District Democratic Committee will select three candidates to present to the Governor, and the Governor will choose a successor to Ihlenfeld’s seat from one of the three names.
